Grant Program
The Boston Adult Literacy Fund's partnership with literacy programs is one of our greatest assets. We award two-year grants to Greater Boston community-based adult literacy programs on an open and competitive basis.

While measurable student achievement is our basic criterion in evaluating proposals, we believe that adults learn most effectively in a learning environment that is participatory and learner-centered. For this reason, we support literacy centers that are committed to involving learners and their communities in their programs.

There are more than 125 community-based adult literacy programs in Greater Boston, and any of them may submit proposals to us. Programs applying for our funding select their most pressing literacy need and then document how they would fill that need. This process works well: it maintains community control over the program while we can fund programs that demonstrate both effective literacy practices and a commitment to developing their communities. "We are…grateful to BALF for…its awareness that the process of nurturing human growth is neither a quick or simple undertaking."
--Directors of Julie's Family Learning Program
"Because of BALF, Boston's Deaf residents are breaking through long standing barriers; learning English, developing computer skills… and pursuing economic opportunity. You have made this happen through the tremendous awareness and responsiveness you have shown in recognizing the need for services that match the language and culture of Deaf people."
--Executive Director of DEAF, Inc.
