Boston Adult
Literacy Fund Strategic Program Initiatives
African-American
Men Persistence Project (A-AMen)
Quantitative data provided by our funded programs reveal that despite their
needs, few African-American men attend literacy programs and fewer still persist
until they attain high school credentials. Our goal is to help African-American
men persist in their literacy programs so that they can attain the basic education
and employment they want and need. We address the problems of African-American
men in the lowest socio-economic stratum.
A-AMEN
works with learners through a special curriculum tailored to their needs with
themes from African-American history and culture, computer training, mentoring,
and counseling to achieve concrete objectives. The
men in the program will receive their high school credentials so they can move
on to higher education and /or job training programs. In addition, while they
are in
A-AMen,
we help them find jobs that allow them to obtain housing and meet the needs
of their daily life. Workshops on civic participation, parenting, domestic violence,
economic literacy, and community building are presented.
Once we have tested our program, we will develop a tool kit to design and implement
similar programs at other Boston sites and in other cities. Promoting African-American
men's persistence in achieving their educational goals and obtaining sustainable
employment will be a transformational force in the lives of children, adults,
families, and communities.
